A threat to the organ of vision - Sicca syndrome
After many hours of work in front of a computer screen, most people complain of continuous tear flow, bloodshot eyes, red conjunctivae, a sensation of burning and itching, headaches, drowsiness and apathy. In addition, most of them report vision disorders and a feeling of dry eyes. The studies performed by the Teaching Hospital of Ophthalmology in Wrocław reveal that about 96% of computer workers have ailments of the organ of vision.
What is Sicca Syndrome?
The eyes are dry, burning and bloodshot. A picture out of focus, excessive glare, sudden brightness or blinking picture on the monitor screen may additionally reduce the frequency with which we blink our eyelids and thus spread moisture over the eyes. It is the first symptom of the Sicca syndrome, followed by other symptoms such as dryness, corneal opacity and a gradual loss of vision.
Causes:
- unsuitable monitor screen,
- incorrectly adjusted parameters of the monitor,
- not using the full potential of the screen,
- prolonged work with small-size fonts
- blurred picture
- excessive glare
- sudden brightness
- blinking monitor screen
Symptoms
- dryness of the eyeball
- bloodshot and burning eyes
- corneal opacity
Prevention:
- blinking the eyelids frequently,
- avoiding prolonged visual tasks,
- proper use of an adequate monitor screen with a refresh rate of at least 85 Hz
- working with fonts no smaller than 11-12 points
- doing exercises such as closing the eyes tight and opening them wide while moving away from the screen
- exercises consisting of closing the eyes and covering them tightly with the palms of the hands, at the same time pressing the eyeballs with the wrists until the coloured spots before the eyes disappear
