Work-related diseases Office work environment poses many threats to its users. They are not only associated with the possibility of suffering an accident at work, but also with long-term risks of using particular items of office equipment and their negative impact on a worker’s osseous and skeletal system, his or her eyesight, wellbeing, etc. The consequences of this impact are not visible at once, but, slowly and systematically, they lead to degeneration of the spine and deterioration of the eyesight and hearing. They can also aggravate allergy and intensify painful and degenerative conditions in almost the entire body. The harmful effects of a badly designed workplace may not become apparent until some years later, manifesting themselves in the form of diseases and irreversible degenerative changes. Even then we do not always associate these ailments with our unhealthy work at the computer. A few of the most common diseases have recently been included in the National Register of Occupational Diseases, constituting an annex to the Decree of the Council of Ministers of 30 July 2002 concerning the national register of occupational diseases, detailed principles as to the procedures with regard to reporting of the risks, determination and treatment of occupational diseases, and entities competent for these matters.
