Listening to music in the office can be a form of music therapy or, at least, it can contain the elements of such a therapy.
In the past, the therapeutic properties of music were mainly used in clinical cases, but now preventive music therapy is becoming increasingly popular. The office is a place where we may benefit from the favourable properties of music.
All kinds of music can be used, not only classical music as was believed until recently. We can use well known and popular songs, quiet and melodious tunes or instrumental pieces, marches, recordings of the sounds of nature, pop, jazz, oriental music and, of course, classical music.
The beneficial effects of music therapy, according to specialists, include stress reduction, mood improvement, facilitation of the mental processes, reduction of muscular tension, improvement of the nervous system efficiency, and regulation of the metabolism, circulation and breathing cycle.
Music at work, however, should not become a tiring noise that hinders the concentration and finally leads to subconscious stress. We may turn on the radio in the morning and listen to a popular station until the last minutes of our work; the music is played loudly, we listen to everything that is broadcast, including news, commercials and programs on social and political subjects.
After eight hours of such conditions, many people return home with a headache and only want to rest in silence. They do not realize that they feel bad due to excessive and continuous noise at work. Therefore, we should always remember the golden mean and avoid excess.
