According to the ordinance of the Minister of Labour and Social Policy dated 26 September 1997 on general principles of safety and hygiene at work and the ordinance of the Minister of Labour and Social Care dated 1 December 1998 on safety and hygiene of work at stations equipped with screen monitor, the employer has an obligation to provide suitable lighting to ensure comfort of work with eyes.
- There should be daylight in rooms where the work is permanently performed.
- Regardless of the daylight there should be extra electric lighting with parameters conforming to Polish Standards.
- Dazzling of fixtures, windows, transparent or translucent walls or bright surfaces in a room and reflections on the monitor screen should be reduced (suitable lighting fixtures, blinds and curtains should be used)
- It is admissible to use fixtures of spot lighting provided that the fixtures do not dazzle.
PN-EN 12464-1: 2003 on lighting stipulates that:
- The value of light intensity at a work-place with a screen monitor is 500 lx.
- The highest average values of luminance of fixtures that may reflect in screens at the normal angle of watching are:
– not more than 1.000 cd/m2 for I and II class screen (good and average quality)
- not more that 200 cd/m2 for III class screen of poor quality.
